I think my tires are done

This past weekend I did my 8th autocross on these tires for the season. Having picked them up for $100 at the beginning of summer, I think this was a very good deal. Now looking at them, I would say they are sufficiently toast! I don’t know much about slicks and how long they last but I would say I’ve gotten my money’s worth for sure.

Plus it was an epic battle to the finish with my only competition in class. We were neck and neck, back and forth with times, but I managed to squeak out a win on my final run.

He was running the same tires and has a similar setup for suspension in his NA. My only real advantage is more seat time with my car but he has years of go kart experience so it was still a fair match up. Anyways, it really was an epic battle. I was ahead by 2.5 seconds and then he somehow dropped 3 seconds off his time. I subsequently beat the time by 2 tenths but hit a cone somewhere. Then my final run had a rerun due to cones not set and I did a hot lap to drop another half second off my time and secure my 1 second victory with a clean run.

Yeah, I’d say you got your money’s worth alright.

That Tiburon is always so slow but I see him at nearly every event there. Must be sad to repeatedly get beat by a Prius.

eh, they still have the grooves so they have tread left, but they may be past their limit depending on the number of heat cycles they’ve seen so they won’t be nearly as fast as a fresh set, but save em for a track day or fun runs!

Oh they were heat cycled out already when I bought them, that’s how I got them so cheap. I only use them for autocross so it’s perfect for me. I just wonder how I would know if they are actually done for even that purpose. I could probably do another event in the Spring but I’d be pushing it after that.

There should be small spots in various places across the tire where you can measure the depth of the remaining rubber, should you procure a tread depth gauge. Since they’re already heat-cycled out, you can always just do what most folks do; continue to run them until cords are showing. Those top two tires actually look to still have a fair bit of rubber on them. The bottom two probably don’t have more than another event or so left in them.

I must be in one of the few regions where not everyone in a SP class runs Hoosiers (ASP), I even beat a guy running them on my RE11s

I’m wondering if I am better off running the shitty ones front or rear. It’s a Miata so I guess it doesn’t really matter. I suppose I could always find someplace to do donuts until they explode lol.

Well there are so few of us generally that CSP is not a large class. There are 5 or 6 other people I have seen but they have actual setups for the class and destroy me when they show up. I’m in it for fun but it was nice to have someone in my own league to battle. I don’t actually know what other mods would require me to stay in SP.

Also, I specifically wanted to run slicks because it’s cheaper than 200tw tires. It’s a real challenge though having almost no communication from the tires where the grip limit is. I’d like to eventually get into street tires.

From a performance stand point, it probably doesn’t matter too much on a Miata. From a longevity standpoint, my instinct would be to put them on the rear. The two worn ones look like they are one minor inside front tire lockup under braking from being corded. I don’t recall ever really locking up the rears on a miata unless you get into a full on spin and/or off course excursion.

Good point, I hadn’t thought about braking. Thankfully I have never ended up in the grass before and I don’t plan on doing that any time soon haha.
